Overview of Venous Disease
Healthy leg veins have valves that keep blood flowing to the heart. When these valves stop working properly and allow blood to flow backward and pool in the lower leg veins, this is known as vein disease, also called venous reflux. If venous reflux disease is left untreated, symptoms can worsen over time.
Symptoms of vein disease include:
- Swelling
- Heaviness/leg fatigue
- Painful/throbbing legs
- Itching or burning
- Restless legs
- Leg cramps
- Skin discoloration
- Spider veins
- Varicose veins
Risk factors for vein disease include:
- Genetics
- Gender
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Other health conditions
- Prolonged sitting and/or standing
Diagnosis of Venous Disease
The Vein Center of Southwest Louisiana is home to an experienced team of specialists who can diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions caused by venous disease. During an evaluation, you may be asked to stand to allow the doctor to assess your legs, veins, and any swelling while you have pressure on your legs. You will be asked to describe the severity of your leg pain and any other symptoms you are experiencing. In addition, you may need to undergo an ultrasound imaging test to help your doctor visualize the veins in more detail for an accurate diagnosis.
Complete a self-assessment today to evaluate your symptoms and risk factors and to see whether you qualify for a vein screening.
